Samant Chandrasekhar was born in the royal family of Khandapada. Since childhood he liked watching the sun, moon and the stars in the sky. He got his education from his father and some other pundits. He used to measure shadows of the mountains, trees etc since his childhood. At the age of 14 he acquired proficiency in Sanskrit grammar, poems, plays and astrology etc.

He decided to change the then used Oriya Panji and to start a new panji having no errors in it. At the age of 14 he started his research work in this direction. He hasn’t used any of the modern machinaries for that. After 20 years of constant effort and hard work, he started writing his findings. He finished writing this book named “Sidhant Darpan” in the year 1892. But due to unavailability of funds, the book got published in 1899. He has discovered many new theories along with modifying the old wrong theories prevailing at that time. He has written the way of creating Panji in his book ‘Sidhanta Darpana’. Using this calculation he created the first yearly Panjika. Till now also his theory of creating the Panjika is being used in Orissa.

He was felicitated with the ‘Mahamahopadhyay’ award by the british government. He was a man of high molare and was honest, religious, generous. He will be remembered forever for his world famous astronomy book “Sidhanta Darpan”.
