Maharaja SriRamachandra BhanjaDeo was born in Baripada. Before he could finish his graduation at Ravenshaw college, he was sworn in as the King of Mayurbhanj in the year 1890. And as such he has to leave his graduation course. He has helped many institutions economically like the Cuttack Medical College, Ravenshaw college, Utkal Sahitya Samaj, Cuttack townhall, Utkal University, Banaras Hindu University and the Utkal Sammilani etc. During his reign he has carried on many projects of public interest.Some of his works include the Baripada to Rupsa railway track, Baripada Municipality, Jubuli library of Baripada, Orphanage and leprosy homes etc. He was very generous. He has paid visits to many countries like America, Europe, Switzerland, Japan, England and China in the 1910.
He has utilised the experiences gathered from his visit in the upliftment and development of his state. He has set up a State Council consisting of many eminent persons and he consulted with this council regarding the state matters. Pundit Gopabandhu was a member of this council during the period 1909 to 1912. This way of democratic thinking was very new in India during that period. His state was respected as the most disciplined state in India at that time.
He has helped the co-operative movement of India by providing land to the founder of Indian co-operative movement, Sir Hamilton. He has started the publication of two monthly magazines with the name “Utkalprava” and “Manorama”. The Purnachandra Encyclopedia was published because of his financial assistance. He will be remembered for his contributions towards Orissa and its literature.
